In all these years, there are two questions that get asked almost on a daily basis.

• Do you buy record collections and do you sell 2nd hand?
• Why are you called Analogue October (when its March!)?

Well, to answer to the first question simple… Its a resounding NO. I don’t sell 2nd hand because I have been a customer of a few of Chichester’s very established 2nd hand shops for quite a good few years. 

When I set up the shop in 2017, I did so because our only source for new Vinyl in Chi was HMV. Ugh!!!

Over Priced, and a pretty shabby collection. Long gone were the days when we had an Our Price, Bastow’s Classics, Shattered Records and later-on, MVC (remember their stickers with the MVC price for “members”?)

But I only wanted to sell new records.

To sell the records you would not typically find in a regional HMV. I also wanted to make the record buying experience a very personal one. Thats probably why so many of our customers have since become friends. Shopping in a big multi-national chain is quite a bland, mundane experience. An Independent retailer always offers just that little extra.

But why only new Vinyl? Well, I could argue there are not enough hours in the day to run a shop and then travel for hours to go see a collection that’s up for sale. But the answer is far simpler. I did not want to sell 2nd hand, this close to the town centre, at the detriment to places like Helter Skelter and Time Machine, both of whom serve the used market fantastically!

Nestled on the outskirts of town, on the little one way system, this part of town is a gem waiting to be discovered. Drapers Yard, a hot spot for foodies, is a prime example.

Onto the 2nd question, as to why my shop (and the soon to be launched label) is called Analogue October Records? Well, that’s quite a complicated story. Fortunately, I was asked to take part in a podcast several years ago, long before the shop was even a “thing” to discus my original Digital Detox. An experiment that is remarkably, still ongoing. Little did I know though when I did this podcast that this wee small experiment would turn into something quite extraordinary.

So, there you have it…. The real reason why I don’t do 2nd hand records, and why the shop has such a unique name. A name that works just as well for the remaining 11 months of the year as much as it did when I started this weird experiment!
