Recorded in 1968, ‘Introducing Kenny Cox and The Contemporary Jazz Quintet’ was the debut album by this under-recognised Detroit band led by pianist Kenny Cox which featured trumpeter Charles Moore, tenor saxophonist Leon Henderson, bassist Ron Brooks, and drummer Danny Spencer. The band’s brand of post-bop was certainly influenced by the Miles Davis Quintet, but exhibited its own unique sensibilities on memorable originals like ‘Mystique’, ‘Trance Dance’ and David Durrah’s beautiful piece ‘You’.
